giant cell e. a sessile or pedunculated lesion of the gingiva, or less often the mucous membrane covering edentulous ridges, which represents inflammatory reactions to injury or hemorrhage, and is not considered a true neoplasm. Histologically, it is composed of a spindle cell stroma punctuated by multinucleate giant cells. Called also peripheral giant cell reparative granuloma.

giant cell reparative g., central a lesion of the jaws considered by some authorities to be a giant cell tumor occurring in both benign and malignant forms, and by others as a form of osteogenic sarcoma, varying in degree of malignancy. Most consider it to be a central lesion of the bone of the jaws, presenting an inflammatory reaction to injury or hemorrhage, which is not regarded as a true neoplasm. It is composed of a spindle cell stroma punctuated by multinucleate giant cells.
