The provider who must coordinate the medical or mental health treatment for a patient under the requirements of a managed care plan. HMO's require that a patient's primary care physician (PCP) serve as the "gate keeper" and coordinate all patient care and issue all referrals to specialists or other providers for treatment. Not all HMOs require a gatekeeper.
