| sickle cell retinopathy | A condition marked by dilation and tortuosity of retinal veins, and by microaneurysms and retinal haemorrhages; advanced stages may show neovascularization, vitreous haemorrhage, or retinal detachment. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| hypertensive retinopathy | A retinal condition occurring in accelerated vascular hypertension, marked by arteriolar constriction, flame-shaped haemorrhages, cotton-wool patches, star-figure oedema at the macula, and papilledema. (05 Mar 2000) |
| solar retinopathy | A macular burn from excessive exposure to sunlight or other intense light (e.g., the flash of a short circuit); characterised subjectively by reduced visual acuity. See: solar maculopathy. Synonym: electric retinopathy, solar retinopathy. Origin: photo-+ retina, + G. Pathos, suffering (05 Mar 2000) |
| diabetic retinopathy | <ophthalmology, pathology> A major cause of blindness in diabetics. Retinal disease results from adverse effects on the blood vessels which supply the retina. Swollen retinal vessels which leak fluid into the retina are commonly seen on physical examination of the eyes. Poorly controlled insulin dependent diabetes and/or hypertension are the major risk factors. Symptoms include decreased vision and colour perception. Origin: Gr. Pathos = disease (27 Sep 1997) |
| dysproteinaemic retinopathy | Retinal venous congestion due to increased blood viscosity in dysproteinaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| eclamptic retinopathy | Sudden angiospasm of retinal arterioles, later followed by retinal vascular signs of advanced hypertensive retinopathy; vascular changes disappear rapidly after termination of the pregnancy. Synonym: eclamptic retinopathy, gravidic retinopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| electric retinopathy | A macular burn from excessive exposure to sunlight or other intense light (e.g., the flash of a short circuit); characterised subjectively by reduced visual acuity. See: solar maculopathy. Synonym: electric retinopathy, solar retinopathy. Origin: photo-+ retina, + G. Pathos, suffering (05 Mar 2000) |
| toxaemic retinopathy of pregnancy | Sudden angiospasm of retinal arterioles, later followed by retinal vascular signs of advanced hypertensive retinopathy; vascular changes disappear rapidly after termination of the pregnancy. Synonym: eclamptic retinopathy, gravidic retinopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| toxic retinopathy | Retinal changes due to prolonged administration of various drugs. (05 Mar 2000) |
| transient retinopathy | Transient traumatic retinal angiopathy due to a sudden rise in venous pressure, as in compression of the body from seat belt injury; ocular fundi show large white patches associated with the retinal veins about the disk or macula, haemorrhages, and retinal oedema; thought to be due to fat embolism from bone marrow. Synonym: Purtscher's disease, transient retinopathy, traumatic retinopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |

Synonym: Purtscher's disease, transient retinopathy, traumatic retinopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Leber's idiopathic stellate retinopathy | An inflammation affecting the optic nerve head and the posterior pole of the retina, with cells in the nearby vitreous, usually producing a macular star. Synonym: papilloretinitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| leukaemic retinopathy | Appearance of the retina in all types of leukaemia, characterised by engorgement and tortuosity of veins, scattered haemorrhages, and oedema of the retina and disk. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lipaemic retinopathy | A milkiness of the retinal vessels (lipaemia retinalis) combined with hard-edged fatty exudates, seen in patients with diabetic acidosis and hyperlipaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| abdominal external oblique muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, fifth to twelfth ribs; insertion, anterior half of lateral lip of iliac crest, inguinal ligament, and anterior layer of the rectus sheath; action, diminishes capacity of abdomen, draws thorax downward; nerve supply, thoracoabdominal nerves. Synonym: musculus obliquus externus abdominis, abdominal external oblique muscle. (05 Mar 2000) |
