ejection fraction
simple test that measures the fraction of blood pumped or ejected from the heart with each beat. Can be measured with an echocardiogram.

ejection f.
the proportion of the volume of blood in the ventricles at the end of diastole that is ejected during systole; it is the stroke volume divided by the end-diastolic volume, often expressed as a percentage. It is normally 65 ± 8 per cent; lower values indicate ventricular dysfunction.

ejection m.
a type of systolic murmur occurring predominantly in midsystole, at the time of maximal ejection volume and blood flow velocity, such as that heard in aortic or pulmonary stenosis; it is due to ejection of blood into the root of the aorta or pulmonary artery, is diamond-shaped, and ends before the second heart sound. Cf. regurgitant m.
