cat's-eye pupil A distorted, elongated pupil; usually due to anterior segment anomaly.
(05 Mar 2000)
Robertson pupil <clinical sign> Pupils of the eye which react to accommodation but not to light. Seen in cases of tertiary syphilis.
(27 Sep 1997)
Gunn pupil Relative afferent pupillary defect.
Synonym: Gunn pupil.
(05 Mar 2000)
cutaneous pupil reflex Dilation of the pupil following scratching of the skin of the neck.
Synonym: ciliospinal reflex, cutaneous pupil reflex, cutaneous-pupillary reflex, skin-pupillary reflex.
(05 Mar 2000)
seclusion of pupil The condition resulting from posterior annular synechia, in which the iris is bound down throughout the entire pupillary margin, but the pupil is not occluded.
Synonym: exclusion of pupil.
(05 Mar 2000)
Holmes-Adie pupil <syndrome> A condition manifested by usually one tonic pupil with absent tendon reflexes.
An idiopathic postganglionic denervation of the parasympathetically innervated intraocular muscles, usually complicated by signs of aberrant regeneration of these nerves: a weak light reaction with segmental palsy of iris sphincter, a strong slow near response. Deep tendon reflexes, particularly ankle and knee, are often asymmetrically reduced.
See: tonic pupil.
Synonym: Adie's pupil, Holmes-Adie pupil, Holmes-Adie syndrome, pupillotonic pseudotabes.
(05 Mar 2000)
pupil 1. A youth or scholar of either sex under the care of an instructor or tutor. "Too far in years to be a pupil now." (Shak) "Tutors should behave reverently before their pupils." (L'Estrange)
2. A person under a guardian; a ward.
3. A boy or a girl under the age of puberty, that is, under fourteen if a male, and under twelve if a female.
Synonym: Learner, disciple, tyro. See Scholar.
Origin: F. Pupille, n. Masc. & fem, L. Pupillus, pupilla, dim. Of pupus boy, pupa girl. See Puppet, and cf. Pupil of the eye.
<anatomy> The aperture in the iris; the sight, apple, or black of the eye. See the Note under Eye, and Iris.
<medicine> Pin-hole pupil, the pupil of the eye when so contracted (as it sometimes is in typhus, or opium poisoning) as to resemble a pin hole.
Origin: F. Pupille, n. Fem, L. Pupilla the pupil of the eye, originally dim. Of pupa a girl. See Puppet, and cf. Pupil a scholar.
Source: Websters Dictionary
(01 Mar 1998)
Horner's pupil Constricted pupil due to impairment of sympathetic nerve innervation of the dilator muscle of the pupil.
See: Horner's syndrome.
(05 Mar 2000)
Hutchinson's pupil Dilation of the pupil on the side of the lesion as part of a third nerve palsy; often due to herniation of the uncus of the temporal lobe through the tentorial notch.
(05 Mar 2000)
occlusion of pupil The presence of an opaque membrane closing the pupillary area.
(05 Mar 2000)
tadpole-shaped pupil An intermittent, brief distortion and dilation of a pupil that draws one part of the iris into a peak so that the pupil resembles a tadpole; a temporary, benign condition associated with migraine that may leave the patient with a Horner's syndrome.
(05 Mar 2000)
tonic pupil Usually a unilateral abnormality of the eye characterised by slow pupillary constriction to light and in which there is a delayed reaction to changes in accommodation and convergence. The affected pupil is usually larger.
(12 Dec 1998)
entrance pupil <microscopy> The apparent size of the limiting aperture of a lens or lens system (properly that of the diaphragm), as seen from the object plane. This can shift and become a complex matter in some circumstances. In a properly set up microscope system it should be that of the substage iris diaphragm.
(05 Aug 1998)
exclusion of pupil The condition resulting from posterior annular synechia, in which the iris is bound down throughout the entire pupillary margin, but the pupil is not occluded.
Synonym: exclusion of pupil.
(05 Mar 2000)
exit pupil <microscopy> The exit pupil of a lens system is an image of the entrance pupil (hence conjugate to it) and normally should be the image of the limiting diaphragm. In both the microscope and the telescope it is the eyepoint where the beam has its smallest cross-section. It is also called the Ramsden circle or eyepoint.
