The loss of some genetic material from a chromosome. A deletion can be the loss of an entire chromosome, a section of one chromosome, a single gene, or a smaller part of a gene. Some deletions are large enough to see by looking directly at the chromosomes under a microscopic. Smaller deletions may only be found by more detailed techniques.
