The number of deaths per 1,000 population in a given year. Also known as the Crude Death Rate [CDR], because it is calculated without any refinement or standardization. India's CDR was 8.4 in the year 2001 (Census 2001). Assuming linear growth or decline, the population at mid year is also the average population for the year. So CDR is D/PX 1000, where 'D' is deaths and 'P' is the population for the given year.
