17.72 deaths/1,000 population (2001 estimate). Kabul is the most landmined capital in the world, and mines kill on average 25 people a day in Afghanistan. The Taliban have disallowed board games that foreign agencies were using to instruct the mostly illiterate population in mine-awareness because the games used banned pictures of humans and animals. The alternative, flash cards, was outlawed as gambling.

| death rate |
The number of deaths per 1,000 population in a given year. Also known as the Crude Death Rate [CDR], because it is calculated without any refinement or standardization. India's CDR was 8.4 in the year 2001 (Census 2001). Assuming linear growth or decline, the population at mid year is also the average population for the year. So CDR is D/PX 1000, where 'D' is deaths and 'P' is the population for the given year.
