A virus, which can cause severe disease in unborn babies if their mother catches the infection during pregnancy. Infection is common and by childbearing age 60-80% of the population will have been exposed to the virus. Catching the virus during pregnancy is not common.

Infection caused by the cytomegalovirus. Primary infection of the mother during pregnancy may result in the death of the fetus or serious generalized disease of the newborn. More commonly, congenital infection follows a benign course though about 10% of affected children may subsequently be mentally retarded.

A member of the herpes groups of viruses. Most adults and children who catch CMV have no symptoms, although some people may get a fever, sore throat, fatigue and swollen glands. CMV is of most risk to unborn children of women who get CMV for the first time during pregnancy. About 7 to 10% of these babies will have symptoms at birth or will develop disabilities including mental retardation, small head size, hearing loss, and delays in development.
