Synonym: corneal spot.
(05 Mar 2000)
corneal staphyloma A bulging near the anterior pole of the eyeball.
Synonym: corneal staphyloma.
(05 Mar 2000)
corneal stroma The lamellated connective tissue constituting the thickest layer of the cornea between the bowman and descemet membranes.
(12 Dec 1998)
corneal topography Measurement of the anterior surface of the cornea, its curvature and shape. It is used often to diagnose keratoconus and other corneal diseases, and corneal changes after keratotomy and keratoplasty. A significant application is in the fitting of contact lenses. In performing corneal topography, many different techniques can be employed: keratometry, keratoscopy, photokeratoscopy, profile photography, computer-assisted image processing, etc.
(12 Dec 1998)
corneal transplant A surgical procedure to replace a damaged cornea with a healthy one from a donor's eye. Unlike transplantation of most other organs, the cornea tends to have a problem with transplant rejection. Corneal transplants are indicated in cases of severe corneal injury or corneal infection (corneal ulcer) which has left the cornea scarred.
(27 Sep 1997)
corneal transplantation Partial or total replacement of the cornea from one human or animal to another.
(12 Dec 1998)
corneal trepanation corneal transplant
corneal ulcer An infectious process of the cornea, resulting in clouding of the cornea, marked eye pain and decreased vision.
See: Herpes simplex keratitis.
(27 Sep 1997)
Salzmann's nodular corneal degeneration Large and prominent nodules of a solid, opaque material that stands out from the surface of the cornea; occurs occasionally in persons previously affected by phlyctenular keratitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
serpiginous corneal ulcer Serpentine ulceration of the cornea, due to infection, most often with Streptococcus pneumoniae.
(05 Mar 2000)
dendritic corneal ulcer Keratitis caused by herpes simplex virus.
(05 Mar 2000)
endothelium, corneal Single layer of large flattened cells covering the surface of the cornea.
(12 Dec 1998)
epithelium, corneal The outer epithelial layer of the cornea, consisting of stratified squamous epithelium continuous with that of the conjunctiva.
(12 Dec 1998)
juvenile epithelial corneal dystrophy Epithelial dystrophy characterised by progressive cysts and opacities of the corneal epithelium, with onset in infancy.
Inheritance: autosomal dominant with incomplete penetrance.
Synonym: Meesman dystrophy.
(22 Sep 2002)
lattice corneal dystrophy A corneal dystrophy due to localised accumulation of amyloid in a reticular pattern; manifest at puberty and progressing slowly until eventually useful vision is lost; autosomal dominant inheritance.
