| ciliary wreath | The circular figure on the inner surface of the ciliary body, formed by the processes and folds (plicae) taken together. Synonym: ciliary crown, ciliary wreath. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| ciliary zone | The outer, wider zone of the anterior surface of the iris, separated from the pupillary zone by the collarette. Synonym: zona ciliaris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ciliary zonule | A series of delicate meridional fibres arising from the inner surface of the orbiculus ciliaris that run in bundles between, and in a very thin layer over, the ciliary processes; at the inner border of the corona, the fibres diverge into two groups that are attached to the capsule on the anterior and posterior surfaces of the lens close to the equator; the spaces between these two layers of fibres are filled with aqueous humor. Synonym: zonula ciliaris, apparatus suspensorius lentis, suspensory ligament of lens, Zinn's zonule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| motor root of ciliary ganglion | A branch of the oculomotor nerve supplying parasympathetic preganglionic nerve fibres to the ciliary ganglion. Synonym: radix parasympathica ganglii ciliaris, radix oculomotoria ganglii ciliaris, motor root of ciliary ganglion, oculomotor root of ciliary ganglion, radix brevis ganglii ciliaris, short root of ciliary ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sensory root of ciliary ganglion | Sensory fibres passing from the eyeball through the ciliary ganglion to their cell bodies in the trigeminal ganglion via the nasociliary nerve. Synonym: radix sensoria ganglii ciliaris, ramus communicans nervi nasociliaris cum ganglio ciliari, radix nasociliaris, long root of ciliary ganglion, nasociliary root, radix longa ganglii ciliaris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| short ciliary nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of a number of branches of the ciliary ganglion, supplying the ciliary muscles, iris, and tunics of the eyeball. Synonym: nervus ciliaris brevis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| short posterior ciliary artery | <anatomy, artery> One of approximately seven branches of the ophthalmic artery which pass around the optic nerve to supply the eyeball. Dividing into some 15-20 branches, they penetrate the sclera adjacent to the optic nerve, supplying the choroid and ciliary processes. Anastomoses: with central retinal artery and long and anterior ciliary arteries (at the ora serrata). Synonym: arteria ciliaris posterior brevis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| short root of ciliary ganglion | A branch of the oculomotor nerve supplying parasympathetic preganglionic nerve fibres to the ciliary ganglion. Synonym: radix parasympathica ganglii ciliaris, radix oculomotoria ganglii ciliaris, motor root of ciliary ganglion, oculomotor root of ciliary ganglion, radix brevis ganglii ciliaris, short root of ciliary ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sympathetic root of ciliary ganglion | Postganglionic fibres, having cell bodies in the superior cervical ganglion, branching from the carotid plexus passing through the ciliary ganglion without synapse to reach the eyeball. Synonym: radix sympathica ganglii ciliaris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| oculomotor root of ciliary ganglion | A branch of the oculomotor nerve supplying parasympathetic preganglionic nerve fibres to the ciliary ganglion. Synonym: radix parasympathica ganglii ciliaris, radix oculomotoria ganglii ciliaris, motor root of ciliary ganglion, oculomotor root of ciliary ganglion, radix brevis ganglii ciliaris, short root of ciliary ganglion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| long ciliary nerve | <anatomy, nerve> One of two or three branches of the nasociliary nerve, which by-pass the ciliary ganglion, supplying post-synaptic sympathetic fibres for the dilator pupillae muscle and sensory fibres for the ciliary muscles, iris, and cornea. Synonym: nervus ciliaris longus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| long root of ciliary ganglion | Sensory fibres passing from the eyeball through the ciliary ganglion to their cell bodies in the trigeminal ganglion via the nasociliary nerve. Synonym: radix sensoria ganglii ciliaris, ramus communicans nervi nasociliaris cum ganglio ciliari, radix nasociliaris, long root of ciliary ganglion, nasociliary root, radix longa ganglii ciliaris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acetone body | <biochemistry> Any of the three compounds created by acetyl coenzyme A (acetoacetate, hydroxybutyrate, and acetone) which are water-soluble cellular fuels normally exported by the liver. They can build up in the blood and body tissues because of starvation, untreated diabetes mellitus, or other disorders that interfere with carbohydrate metabolism. The body rids itself of ketones mainly through urine, but it rids itself of acetone through the lungs, which gives the breath a characteristic fruity odour. If ketones build up in the body long enough, they cause serious illness and coma (see ketoacidosis.) (09 Oct 1997) |
| acute inclusion body encephalitis | The most common acute encephalitis, caused by HSV-1; affects persons of any age; preferentially involves the inferomedial portions of the temporal lobe and the orbital portions of the frontal lobes; pathologically, severe haemorrhagic necrosis is present along with, in the acute stages, intranuclear eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the neurons and glial cells. Synonym: acute inclusion body encephalitis, herpes encephalitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adrenal body | See adrenal gland. (12 Dec 1998) |
