chorionic villus sampling A procedure performed vaginally via the cervix or abdominally between the 8th and 12th week of pregnancy to detect genetic defects in the fetus. A few milligrams of Cells are aspirated (sucked out) from the chorion - a layer of embryonic tissue surrounding the fetus (fetal placenta) - and are analyzed for chromosomal abnormalities.
