Noun. (Greek, kerkos = tail. Pl., cerci). An appendage (generally paired) of the tenth abdominal segment. Usually regarded as sensory and characteristically slender, filamentous and segmented. Not segmented in Orthoptera, Phasmatodea and Dermaptera. Incorrectly applied to appendicular structures on the ninth segment of Coleoptera larvae, or eighth and ninth segments of Hymenoptera.
