| celiac disease |
(Sprue) or Catarrhal Dysentery (tropical or nontropical) is an intestinal malabsorption syndrome characterized by diarrhea, electrolyte depletion, malnutrition, bleeding tendency, and abnormally low blood calcium. Persons with celiac disease are unable to properly absorb gluten. The only treatment for celiac disease is a gluten-free diet, an example of which is the Gluten Restricted Diet, for an indefinite period. Antibiotics and folic acid may help keep the disease in remission.

| celiac disease |
A digestive disease that damages the small intestine and interferes with absorption of nutrients from food. People who have celiac disease cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, and barley. When people with celiac disease eat foods containing gluten, their immune system responds by damaging the small intestine, specifically the villi.
