| cavernous resonance | A percussion sound, like that produced by striking a large empty bottle, obtained by percussing over a pulmonary cavity. Synonym: cavernous resonance. (05 Mar 2000) |

| cavernous respiration | A hollow reverberating sound heard on auscultation over a cavity in the lung. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cavernous rhonchus | A resonating, bubbling sound caused by air entering a cavity partly filled with fluid. Synonym: cavernous rhonchus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cavernous sinus | <radiology> Contents: III oculomotor n., IV trochlear n., V-1 ophthalmic n. (trigeminal n.), V-2 maxillary n. (trigeminal n.), VI abducens n. Note: mandibular n. (V-3) passes through foramen rotundum (12 Dec 1998) |
| cavernous sinus branch of internal carotid artery | <anatomy, artery> A number of small branches of the cavernous part of the internal carotid artery. See: ganglionic branch of internal carotid artery, basal tentorial branch of internal carotid artery, marginal tentorial branch of internal carotid artery. Synonym: ramus sinus cavernosi arteriae carotidis arteriae, cavernous arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cavernous sinus syndrome | <syndrome> This condition is characterised by oedema of the eyelids and conjunctivae and paralysis of the third, fourth and sixth cranial nerves. It is due to a cavernous sinus thrombosis. (27 Sep 1997) |
| cavernous sinus thrombosis | <neurology> A blood clot within the cavernous sinus (a sinus cavity which is bordered by the sphenoid bone and the temporal bone). This condition produces a syndrome called cavernous sinus syndrome. (16 Mar 1998) |
| cavernous tissue | A tissue with numerous vascular spaces that may become engorged with blood. Synonym: cavernous tissue. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cavernous transfer of portal vein | <anatomy, vein> Replacement of the portal vein by a number of collateral channels, a consequence of thrombosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| cavernous veins of penis | The cavernous venous spaces in the erectile tissue of the penis. Synonym: venae cavernosae penis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| compressible cavernous bodies | Submucous venous plexuses found at the level of the pharyngoesophageal junction and anal canal, which assist in reducing or obliterating the lumen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| haemangioma, cavernous | A vascular tumour preponderantly composed of large dilated blood vessels, often containing large amounts of blood, occurring in the skin, subcutaneously, or both, and also in many viscera, particularly the liver, spleen, pancreas, and sometimes the brain. The typical superficial lesions are bright to dark red in colour; deep lesions have a blue colour. A cavernous haemangioma in the skin extends more deeply than a capillary haemangioma and is less likely to regress spontaneously. (12 Dec 1998) |
| anvil sound | In cases of a large pulmonary cavity or of pneumothorax, a clear metallic sound obtained by striking a coin, held against the chest, by another coin, or by flicking the chest wall with one's fingernail; the sound is heard on auscultating the chest wall on the same side anteroposteriorly. Synonym: anvil sound, bell sound, coin test. (05 Mar 2000) |
| atrial sound | The sound produced in late diastole in association with ventricular filling due to atrial systole and related to reduced ventricular compliance. It is a low frequency oscillation that may be normal at older ages owing to a physiologic decline in ventricular compliance but is nearly always abnormal at younger ages if it is of high intensity or palpable. It is common in ventricular hypertrophy, particularly with hypertension, and is almost invariable during acute myocardial infarction. Fourth heart sounds may arise from the right or left ventricle or both. Synonym: atrial sound. (05 Mar 2000) |
| auscultatory sound | A rale, murmur, bruit, fremitus, or other sound heard on auscultation of the chest or abdomen. (05 Mar 2000) |
