| case-control study |
A study where cases (with a disease of interest) are compared to control patients (without the disease). Thies study design is useful for hypothesis generation, but can provide only very weak proof of causality. It is often selected when studying a comparitively rare disease, since a Cohort would have to be huge to yield enough cases.
