The number of live births per 1,000 population in a given year. Also known as the Crude Birth Rate [CBR]. India's CBR was 25.4 in the year 2001 (Census 2001). Assuming linear growth or decline, the population at mid year is also the average population for the year. So CBR is B/PX 1000, where 'B' is live births and 'P' is the population for the given year.

is calculated by dividing the number of live births in a population in a year by the midyear resident population. Birth rates are expressed as the number of live births per 1,000 population. The rate may be restricted to births to women of specific age, race, marital status, or geographic location (specific rate), or it may be related to the entire population (crude rate).
