kappa particle <microbiology> Gram-negative bacterial endosymbiont of Paramoecium spp., (Caedobacter taeniospiralis) that confers the killer trait, infected Paramoecium are resistant to the toxin liberated by infected forms. Killing activity is associated with the induction of defective phage in the endosymbiont, leading to the release of R bodies, coded for by the phage genome and apparently of mis assembled phage coat protein.
(18 Nov 1997)
Zimmermann's elementary particle <haematology> A discoid cell (3m diameter) found in large numbers in blood, important for blood coagulation and for haemostasis by repairing breaches (small breaks) in the walls of blood vessels.
Platelet _ granules contain lysosomal enzymes, dense granules contain ADP (a potent platelet aggregating factor) and serotonin (a vasoactive amine). They also release platelet-derived growth factor which presumably contributes to later repair processes by stimulating fibroblast proliferation.
Synonym: thrombocytes.

amyloid beta-protein A 4 kD protein, 39-43 amino acids long, expressed by a gene located on chromosome 21. It is the major protein subunit of the vascular and plaque amyloid filaments in individuals with alzheimer's disease and in aged individuals with trisomy 21 (down syndrome). The protein is found predominantly in the nervous system, but there have been reports of its presence in non-neural tissue.
(12 Dec 1998)
amyloid beta-protein precursor A precursor to the amyloid-beta protein (beta/a4). Alterations in the expression of the amyloid beta-protein precursor (abpp) gene, located on chromosome 21, plays a role in the development of the neuropathology common to both alzheimer disease and down syndrome. Abpp is associated with the extensive extracellular matrix secreted by neuronal cells. Upon cleavage, this precursor produces three proteins of varying amino acid lengths: 695, 751, and 770. The beta/a4 (695 amino acids) or beta-amyloid protein is the principal component of the extracellular amyloid in senile plaques found in alzheimer disease, down syndrome and, to a limited extent, in normal aging.

beta particle (often designated beta rays) Charged particles emitted from a radioactive atom. These particles are identical except for their charge. The charge is classified as positive (positron) or negative (electrons or negatron).
Ãâó: www.nuenergy.org/alt/glossary.htm
beta particle A charged particle emitted from the nucleus of certain unstable atomic nuclei (radioactive elements), having the charge and mass of an electron.
Ãâó: infomanage.com/nonproliferation/primer/nwg.html
beta particle A negatively charged particle emitted from the nucleus of an atom, now known to be an electron. Beta particles are moderately penetrating, depending upon their energy. External sources of beta particles may be potential hazards to skin tissue or the lens of the eyes, if the source is close enough to the tissue.
Ãâó: www.comrad.org/glossary/glos2.htm
beta particle Beta particles are similar to electrons except they come from the atomic nucleus and are not bound to any atom. Beta particles cannot travel very far from their radioactive source. For example, they can travel only about one half an inch in human tissue, and they may travel a few yards in air. They are not capable of penetrating something as thin as a book or a pad of paper.
Ãâó: www.hps1.org/glossary/glossary.htm
beta particle One form of radiation emitted from a nucleus during radioactive decay. Beta radiation can be stopped by an inch of wood or a thin sheet of aluminum, and may cause biological damage if a sufficient amount is internal, or occasionally external, to the body.
