| basilar membrane |
Found in the organ of Corti, it is the cellular membrane in which the hair cells are embedded. The basilar membrane moves in response to pressure waves in the cochlea, initiating a chain of events that results in a nerve impulse traveling to the brain.

A type of migraine that mainly affects children and adolescents. Associated with the headache are a number of symptoms related to the part of the brain supplied by the basilar artery. The organ of hearing. More specifically, a membrane that runs the length of the cochlea which is a bony, fluid-filled spiral in the inner ear. The basilar membrane performs a kind of frequency analysis of the incoming acoustic signal: different locations along the membrane vibrate preferentially in response to different frequencies. The hair cells connected to each part of the membrane thus preferentially send neural information about the presence of those frequencies to the brain. ...
