These names refer to a gelatinous precipitate that is extracted from brown algae and absorbs up to 300 times it's weight in water. Used externally it is a cosmetic thickener and stabilizer. Used internally, algin has the capability of combining with heavy toxic metals in food in the body and allowing them to be passed harmlessly out with the feces.
