UDPglucose a nucleotide derivative of glucose; it donates glucosyl groups in the synthesis of glycogen and other polysaccharides. It is the parent compound from which the other UDPhexoses are synthesized.

UDPglucose 4-epimerase [EC 5.1.3.2] an enzyme of the isomerase class that catalyzes the interconversion of UDPgalactose and UDPglucose in the metabolism of galactose, requiring NAD+ as a cofactor. Deficiency of the enzyme in erythrocytes, an autosomal recessive trait, causes accumulation in red cells of galactose 1-phosphate. Called also UDPgalactose 4-epimerase.

UDPglucose 6-dehydrogenase [EC 1.1.1.22] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of UDPglucose to UDPglucuronate, using NAD+ as an electron acceptor.
