| ubiquinolcytochrome-c |
[EC 1.10.2.2] an enzyme complex of the inner mitochondrial membrane that catalyzes the transfer of electrons from ubiquinol to cytochrome c, oxidizing the former and reducing the latter in a reaction of the electron transport chain (q.v.). The enzyme contains cytochromes b and c1 and iron-sulfur prosthetic groups and is associated with proton translocation and the resultant synthesis of ATP. Called also ubiquinol dehydrogenase.

Ubiquitin is associated with proteins that are about to break down. Their usual function is probably to protect proteins. In many dementias an accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins is found--for example, in Lewy bodies.
