a life-threatening opportunistic type of pneumonia believed to be caused by a protozoan. a highly sensitive test that can detect small amounts of DNA or RNA (genetic material) in a blood or tissue sample using an amplification technique that multiplies the existing DNA/RNA so that it can more easily be detected. PCR assays are used to determine viral loads in persons infected with HIV.
