nocardiosis infection with a species of Nocardia, usually N. asteroides, but occasionally N. brasiliensis or N. otitidis-caviarum; it takes the form of an acute or chronic suppurative infection with abscess formation, usually of the lungs (see pulmonary n.), but with a marked tendency to spread to any organ of the body, especially the brain, skin, or subcutaneous tissues, and sometimes with a fatal outcome. Called also nocardiasis.
