| nephron |
The basic 'filtration unit' of the kidney. One nephron consists of a glomerulus, where water and waste products are forced out of the blood, a capsule that collects this waste fluid, and a tubule that drains the waste fluid away. As the waste fluid passes down the tubule, water, salts and minerals are recovered, according to the body's needs. The nephrons produce urine, which eventually drains into the bladder.
