| leukocytosis of the newborn | An apparently "physiologic" leukocytosis usually observed in newborn infants, in whom the white blood cell counts are usually greater than 10,000 per cu mm, and sometimes range to 45,000 per cu mm, resulting chiefly from increased numbers of neutrophils (especially single and bilobed forms). On the third or fourth day of life, the count generally decreases rapidly, and then fluctuates for several days; beginning about the fourth week of life, a relative lymphocytosis is observed, and this normally continues for a few years. | acute necrotizing myelitis | A spinal cord disorder, probably a demyelinating disease, which affects persons of all ages and either sex. Presents with abrupt or more gradual onset with sensory abnormalities and upper motor neuron weakness; soon a reflexic flaccid motor paralysis and sphincter paralysis supervenes, which is permanent. In some, but not all cases, bilateral or unilateral optic neuritis is associated. In the cerebrospinal fluid, the protein is increased, and mononuclear cells are present. After autopsy, the lesion has been identified as a necrotizing haemorrhagic leukomyelitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis | An acute or recurrent gingivitis of young and middle-aged adults characterised clinically by gingival erythema and pain, fetid odour, and necrosis and sloughing of interdental papillae and marginal gingiva which gives rise to a gray pseudomembrane; fever, regional lymphadenopathy, and other systemic manifestations also may be present. A fusiform bacillus and Treponema vincentii can be isolated from the gingival tissues in large numbers and are felt to play a significant but poorly defined role in the pathogenesis. | pancreatitis, acute necrotizing | Acute inflammation of the pancreas with areas of devitalised pancreatic and/or peripancreatic tissue. These necrotic areas may involve large areas of the pancreas or may be small. When a ct scan is performed with contrast media using a bolus technique, necrotic areas do not perfuse with media and are not enhanced. | group A streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis | A complication of infection with GAS (group A streptococci) in which the bacteria attacks and destroys muscle tissue. According to the CDC, 5-10% of people with severe GAS infection develop necrotizing fasciitis. Though the infection can be treated with antibiotics, the fatality rate is close to 30%.
