acute kidney failure <nephrology> A sudden decline in renal function may be triggered by a number of acute disease processes.
Examples include sepsis (infection), shock, trauma, kidney stones, kidney infection, drug toxicity (aspirin or lithium), poisons or toxins (drug abuse) or after injection with an iodinated contrast dye (adverse effect).
Chronic renal failure represents a slow decline in kidney function over time. Chronic renal failure may be caused by a number of disorders which include long-standing hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, lupus or sickle cell anaemia. Both forms of renal failure result in a life-threatening metabolic derangement.
(27 Sep 1997)
acute kidney transplant rejection <radiology> Findings on ultrasound: globular enlargment of the kidney, swelling and hypoechogenicity of the medullary pyramids, indistinct cortico-medullary junction, foci in the renal cortex
(12 Dec 1998)
african green monkey kidney cell <cell culture> Cells taken from the kidneys of the African green monkey Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus and used to grow certain viruses like poliovirus.
(05 Feb 1998)
amyloid kidney A kidney in which amyloidosis has occurred, usually in association with some chronic illness such as multiple myeloma, tuberculosis, osteomyelitis, or other chronic suppurative inflammation; such kidney's are moderately enlarged and grossly manifest a waxy appearance, with amyloid deposited beneath the endothelium in the glomerular loops and in the arterioles, apparently beginning as foci of thickening of the basement membranes.
Synonym: waxy kidney.
(05 Mar 2000)
anterior inferior segmental artery of kidney Origin, anterior branch of renal.
See: segmental arteries of kidney.
Synonym: arteria segmenti anterioris inferioris renis, artery of anterior {inferior segment of kidney}.
(05 Mar 2000)

See: segmental arteries of kidney.
Synonym: arteria segmenti anterioris superioris renis, artery of anterior {superior segment of kidney}.

arciform veins of kidney Veins that parallel the arcuate arteries, receive blood from interlobular veins and straight venules, and terminate in interlobar veins.
Synonym: venae arcuatae renis, arciform veins of kidney.
(05 Mar 2000)
arcuate arteries of kidney Curved arteries at the corticomedullary border, arising from interlobar arteries and giving rise to interlobular arteries.
Synonym: arteriae arcuatae renis.

Armanni-Ebstein kidney Glycogen vacuolization of the loops of Henle, seen in diabetics before the introduction of insulin.
Synonym: Armanni-Ebstein change.
(05 Mar 2000)
arterial segments of kidney Regions of the kidney supplied by end arteries branching from the renal arteries; they are named anterior inferior segmentum, anterius superior segmentum, inferior segmentum, posterior segmentum, and superior segmentum.
Synonym: segmenta renalia, arterial segments of kidney.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteries of kidney The branches of the renal artery that supply the anatomical segments of kidney. Usually five in number, they are end arteries and give off interlobar, arcuate and interlobular arteries in sequence. The latter send afferent arterioles to the glomeruli as well as branches to the kidney capsule. The segmental arteries of the kidney are identified as: anterior inferior (arteriae segmenti anterioris inferioris renis ); anterior superior (arteriae segmenti anterioris superioris renis ); inferior (arteriae segmenti inferioris renis ); posterior (arteriae segmenti posterioris renis ); and superior (arteriae segmenti superioris renis ).
Synonym: arteriae renis, arteries of kidney.
(05 Mar 2000)
arteriolosclerotic kidney A kidney in which there is sclerosis of the arterioles, i.e., arteriolar nephrosclerosis resulting from long-standing benign hypertension. Such kidney's tend to be pale red-brown or relatively gray, moderately reduced in size, and firmer than normal organs; the capsular surfaces are uniformly finely granular. Most of the arterioles are thickened and hyalinised, thereby resulting in varying degrees of narrowing of the lumens, ischemia, and fibrosis in the interstitial tissue, leading to uniform contraction of the cortex.
