| interferon-b2 | <cytokine> A cytokine that stimulates the growth and differentiation of human B-cells and is also a growth factor for hybridomas and plasmacytomas. It is produced by many different cells including T-cells, monocytes, and fibroblasts. A single chain 25 kD cytokine originally described as a pre B-cell growth factor, now known to have effects on a number of other cells including T-cells which are also stimulated to proliferate. An inducer of acute phase proteins and a colony-stimulating factor acting on mouse bone marrow. Acronym: IL-6 (12 Dec 1998) |
|---|---|
| interferon-beta | <cytokine> One of the type I interferons produced by fibroblasts in response to stimulation by live or inactivated virus or by double-stranded RNA. It is a cytokine with antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulating activity. Synonym: fibroblast interferon. Pharmacological action: adjuvants, immunologic, antineoplastic agent, antiviral agents. Chemical name: Interferon-alphaB (human leukocyte protein moiety reduced) (12 Dec 1998) |
| interferon-gamma | <cytokine> Interferon elaborated by T lymphocytes in response to either specific antigen or mitogenic stimulation. This type II interferon can be produced by recombinant DNA technology and is similar to the interferon secreted by lymphocytes and has antiviral and antineoplastic activity. Synonym: antigen interferon, immune interferon. Pharmacological action: antineoplastic agent, antiviral agents. (20 Sep 2002) |
| interferon inducers | Agents that promote the production and release of interferons. They include mitogens, lipopolysaccharides, and the synthetic polymers poly a-u and poly I-c. Viruses, bacteria, and protozoa have been also known to induce interferons. (12 Dec 1998) |
| technology, recombinant DNA | A series of procedures used to join together (recombine) DNA segments. A recombinant DNA molecule is constructed (recombined) from segments from 2 or more different DNA molecules. Under certain conditions, a recombinant DNA molecule can enter a cell and replicate there, autonomously (on its own) or after it has become integrated into a chromosome. (12 Dec 1998) |
| erythropoietin, recombinant | Erythropoietin prepared by recombinant DNA technology. (12 Dec 1998) |
| fibroblast interferon | <cytokine> One of the type I interferons produced by fibroblasts in response to stimulation by live or inactivated virus or by double-stranded RNA. It is a cytokine with antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulating activity. Synonym: fibroblast interferon. Pharmacological action: adjuvants, immunologic, antineoplastic agent, antiviral agents. Chemical name: Interferon-alphaB (human leukocyte protein moiety reduced) (12 Dec 1998) |
| leukocyte interferon | <cytokine> One of the type I interferons produced by peripheral blood leukocytes or lymphoblastoid cells when exposed to live or inactivated virus, double-stranded RNA, or bacterial products. It is the major interferon produced by virus-induced leukocyte cultures and, in addition to its pronounced antiviral activity, causes activation of NK cells. It is used experimentally in the treatment of hairy-cell leukaemia. A number of different subtypes exist that are elaborated by leukocytes in response to viral infection or stimulation with double-stranded RNA; IFN-alpha-2A and -2B are protein products made by recombinant DNA techniques and are used as antineoplastic agents. See: interferon-alpha 2a, interferon-alpha 2b Synonym: leukocyte interferon. Pharmacological action: antineoplastic agent, antiviral agent. (20 Sep 2002) |
| acrocephalosyndactyly type 1 | <paediatrics> An inherited disease (autosomal dominant) or a spontaneously occurring disease characterised by a peaked head and unusual facial appearance, due to the premature closure of the cranial sutures. A skull X-ray can confirm the diagnosis and treatment is surgical. Inheritance: autosomal dominant. (27 Sep 1997) |
| Alzheimer type I astrocyte | Enlarged frequently multinucleated astrocytes, seen in progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Alzheimer type II astrocyte | Enlarged astrocytes with vesicular nuclei and one or more small basophilic nucleoli, seen in hepatocerebral disease and Wilson's disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| American Type Culture Collection | <cell culture> A key resource for cultured cells, located in Rockville, USA. (12 Dec 1998) |
| Antoni type A neurilemoma | <tumour> Relatively solid or compact arrangement of neoplastic tissue that consists of Schwann cells arranged in twisting bundles and associated with delicate reticulin fibres; the nuclei of the Schwann cells are frequently grouped in parallel rows (so-called palisades), and the nuclei and fibres sometimes form exaggerated tactile corpuscles, called Verocay bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Antoni type B neurilemoma | <tumour> Relatively soft or loose arrangement of neoplastic tissue that consists of Schwann cells in a haphazard or nondescript type of arrangement among reticulin fibres and tiny cystlike foci; fat-laden macrophages may be observed in some of the larger neoplasms. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arthus-type reaction's | Reaction's in man and other species that result from the same basic immunologic (allergic) mechanism which evokes, in the rabbit, the typical Arthus phenomenon. See: immune complex disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
