An abbreviation for implantable cardioverter defibrillator. An ICD is a pager-sized implanted version of an external defibrillator used to treat life-threatening rhythms. Normal Heart Rhythm The normal beating of the heart as regulated by the sinoatrial (SA) node; approximately 60 to 80 beats per minute.

A small electrical device, inserted just below the collarbone, the ICD is slightly larger than a pacemaker (most have pacemaker ability also). Wires from the device are attached to patches directly on the heart. If the heart starts to beat too fast or out of control this device will deliver a shock to reset the heart
