diabetic gingivitis Gingivitis in which the host response to bacterial plaque is presumably modified by the metabolic alterations encountered in the uncontrolled diabetic patient.
(05 Mar 2000)
dilantin gingivitis Gingivitis exacerbated by long-term therapy with diphenylhydantoin; the host response to bacterial plaque is characterised by marked hyperplasia of the fibrous connective tissue and, to a lesser degree, of the surface epithelium, resulting in gross enlargement of interdental papillae which may coalesce and obscure the clinical crowns of the teeth.
Synonym: dilantin gingivitis.

Synonym: dilantin gingivitis.

ulceromembranous gingivitis An acute or recurrent gingivitis of young and middle-aged adults characterised clinically by gingival erythema and pain, fetid odour, and necrosis and sloughing of interdental papillae and marginal gingiva which gives rise to a gray pseudomembrane; fever, regional lymphadenopathy, and other systemic manifestations also may be present. A fusiform bacillus and Treponema vincentii can be isolated from the gingival tissues in large numbers and are felt to play a significant but poorly defined role in the pathogenesis.
Synonym: fusospirochetal gingivitis, trench mouth, ulceromembranous gingivitis, Vincent's disease, Vincent's infection.

leukaemic hyperplastic gingivitis Enlarged gingiva due to infiltration of leukaemic cells and infection from local factors in the face of diminshed host response.
(05 Mar 2000)
group A streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis A complication of infection with GAS (group A streptococci) in which the bacteria attacks and destroys muscle tissue. According to the CDC, 5-10% of people with severe GAS infection develop necrotizing fasciitis. Though the infection can be treated with antibiotics, the fatality rate is close to 30%. This complication often develops as a wound infection after surgery or injury.
(05 Mar 2000)
sialometaplasia, necrotizing A benign, inflammatory, variably ulcerated, occasionally bilateral, self-healing lesion of the minor salivary glands that is often confused clinically and histologically with carcinoma.
(12 Dec 1998)
necrotizing angiitis Inflammatory reaction of blood vessels resulting in fibrinoid necrosis of tissue, especially of the blood vessel wall.
(05 Mar 2000)
necrotizing arteriolitis Necrosis in the media of arterioles, characteristic of malignant hypertension.
Synonym: arteriolonecrosis.
(05 Mar 2000)
necrotizing cellulitis Synonym: gangrenous cellulitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
necrotizing encephalitis Any encephalitis in which extensive brain necrosis occurs, e.g., acute necrotizing haemorrhagic encephalomyelitis.
(05 Mar 2000)
necrotizing encephalomyelopathy Subacute encephalomyelopathy affecting infants, causing dementia, spasticity, and optic atrophy; autosomal recessive inheritance.
Synonym: necrotizing encephalomyelopathy, necrotizing encephalopathy.

necrotizing enterocolitis <radiology> NEC, pneumatosis intestinalis, submucosal: initial finding, mult. Cystic lucencies; looks like stool (!), subserosal: linear lucencies, portal vein: with or without transient; not significant, aetiology: preemie, perinatal stress, intestinal ischemia, survivors may develop intestinal strictures
