Encoded Archival Description is a standard for the encoding of electronic versions of archival inventories and registers. It defines the structural elements of a finding aid and their interrelationships. In short, EAD does for archival inventories and registers what MARC does for catalog records. The EAD standard is embodied in a Document Type Definition (DTD) that conforms to the syntax of Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). For more information.
