eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) a form of equine encephalomyelitis that occurs in the United States from New Hampshire west to Wisconsin and south to Texas, as well as in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and parts of Central and South America. In humans it affects mainly children and the elderly; symptoms are fever, headache, and nausea followed by drowsiness, convulsions, and coma. Mortality is high in both humans and horses. Called also eastern equine encephalitis.
