clostridial t. one elaborated by species of Clostridium, including those causing botulism (botulinus t.), gas gangrene (gas gangrene t.), and tetanus (tetanus t.). In addition, C. difficile produces an exotoxin causing severe intestinal necrosis. C. perfringens produces a number of exotoxins causing gas gangrene, intestinal necrosis, and hemolysis, some with cardiotoxic, deoxyribonuclease, and hyaluronidase activity, and an enterotoxin causing acute food poisoning.
