CPK (noun) enzyme present in skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle and the brain. Serum CPK is increased 10-25 times in the first few hours following a heart attack. The level returns to normal within 2-4 days. CPK serum levels are also increased in progressive muscular dystrophy and following trauma to skeletal muscle. It is not elevated in liver disease or pulmonary infarction.
