bisphosphonate A type of drug which binds to the surface of bone where it is being resorbed (eaten into) and protects against osteoclast activity (bone breakdown). Commonly used types at present are clodronate (Bonefos), given as pills, or pamidronate (Aredia), given as an intravenous injection. Newer bisphosphonates, such as zoledronate (Zometa), are beginning to become available.
