A series of paired segmental structures composed of ectoderm, mesoderm and neural crest cells that are positioned on either side of the developing pharynx. In mammals, the branchial arches contribute to pharyngeal organs and to the connective, skeletal, neural and vascular tissues of the head and neck.

A hero god, protector of poetry and the underworld. Bran ("raven"), son of Llyr and Penarddun, and brother of Branwen and Manawydan. He is associated with a cauldron of regeneration which would revive the dead while leaving them voiceless. Bran's cauldron is destroyed, and he is mortally wounded in the war to rescue his sister Branwen, so he instructed his followers to decapitate him and carry the head to London and bury it, where it would become a defense and a protection to the whole Isle.
