becquerel (Bq.) A measure of the amount of radiation given off by a radioactive substance. A Becquerel is "one disintegration per second". It can express a concentration of radioactivity, eg 200 Bq. per gramme, or a total quantity, eg emissions limits for nuclear plant are given as so many Becquerels per year. Bq replaces the earlier measure "Curies" [qv]
