acute onset of adrenocortical insufficiency or sudden worsening of Addison's disease; manifestations include anorexia, vomiting, abdominal pain, apathy, confusion, extreme weakness, renal loss of sodium and water, and hypotension progressing to shock and, if untreated, death. Called also acute adrenocortical insufficiency and Bernard-Sergent syndrome.
