the practice of adding artificial labor hormones (tradename: pitocin) to speed up slow labors or labors that have stalled. If pitocin is used from the beginning (or some other method, such as amniotomy is used), it is called an 'induction'. If labor is started spontaneously and is slow, stalls, or does not proceed on the artificial timeline the doctor imposes, the labor is said to be 'augmented' with pitocin. Induction/augmentation is very common in the US.
