Any of several silicate minerals including chrysotile, crocidolite, and amosite that separate into long flexible fibers suitable for use as a noncombustible, nonconducting, and chemically resistant material. Asbestos is known as a human carcinogen and is considered a hazardous air pollutant under the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (40 CFR 50-87).
