| sulfite oxidase |
[EC 1.8.3.1] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the final reaction in the degradation of sulfur-containing amino acids, oxidizing sulfite to sulfate; it also oxidizes and detoxifies sulfite and sulfur dioxide from exogenous sources. It is a mitochondrial molybdoenzyme that transfers electrons to cytochrome c via its b5 heme. Deficiency of enzyme activity, due to defect in the enzyme protein or to molybdenum cofactor deficiency (q.v.), results in progressive neurologic abnormalities, lens dislocation, and mental retardation.
