secondary hyperparathyroidism in domestic animals due to an unbalanced diet; there may be insufficient calcium, excessive phosphorus that competes with calcium, or (in ruminants) oxalates that bind to calcium and form insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. The most prominent symptoms are swelling of the mandible and maxilla, loosening of the teeth, and lameness. Called also bran disease, miller's disease, and bighead.
