glucose-6-phosphate isomerase [EC 5.3.1.9] an enzyme of the isomerase class that catalyzes the interconversion glucose 6-phosphate = fructose 6-phosphate. The forward reaction is a step in the Embden-Meyerhof pathway (see illustration at pathway), and the reverse is a step in gluconeogenesis. Deficiency of the enzyme, an autosomal recessive trait, results in hemolytic anemia.
