amplifier
A unidirectional, electronic device used to boost (amplify) signals, with the resulting performance measured in decibels. A typical microphone used for eavesdropping requires some type of amplifier to be connected to amplify the signal.

amplitude
The strength of an audio signal. The unit that measures changes of amplitude is the decibel.

amplitude modulation
One of three methods to add information to a sine wave carrier signal. By varying the voltage level, the magnitude is modified in accordance with the information to be transmitted. Contrast with phase modulation and frequency modulation. Most radio bugs do not use amplitude modulation.

amplitude modulation
A process whereby the amplitude (loudness) of a sound is varied over time. When varied slowly, a tremolo effect occurs. If the frequency of modulation is high, many side frequencies are created which can strongly alter the timbre of a sound.
