alpha1-antitrypsin 1. a plasma protein (an α1-globulin, Mr 53,000) produced primarily in the liver; it is an acute phase reactant and inhibits the activity of elastase, cathepsin G, trypsin and other proteolytic enzymes. Deficiency of this protein is associated with development of emphysema. Also written α1-antitrypsin. Called also alpha1-protease or proteinase inhibitor.  2. alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (human).
