A thin, shallow scratch on the surface of a coin, usually caused by improper cleaning, or mishandling. Hairlines are found on virtually all proof coins, and are considered the most important single factor in grading high quality proof coins. They sometimes appear on business strikes as well. Hairlines tend to show up more often on prooflike business strikes.

Caracul: Wig made from the curly fleece of a caracul goat. Human: Wig made from human hair. Mohair: Wig made from fleece of the angora goat. Synthetic: Hair made from man-made fiber such as nylon, Saran or Dynel. Molded: Realistic looking hairdo fashioned into the sculpted model and part of the mold. Rooted: Fibers, usually synthetic, which are affixed through minute holes in the doll's scalp. Usually applies to soft vinyl doll heads.
