| HIV envelope protein gp120 | External envelope protein of the human immunodeficiency virus which is encoded by the HIV env gene. It has a molecular weight of 120,000 kD and contains numerous glycosylation sites. Gp120 binds to cells expressing CD4 cell-surface antigens, most notably t4-lymphocytes and monocytes/macrophages. Gp120 has been shown to interfere with the normal function of CD4 and is at least partly responsible for the cytopathic effect of HIV. (12 Dec 1998) |

| HIV envelope protein gp160 | An envelope protein of the human immunodeficiency virus that is encoded by the HIV env gene. It has a molecular weight of 160,000 kD and contains numerous glycosylation sites. It serves as a precursor for both the HIV envelope protein gp120 and the HIV envelope protein gp41. (12 Dec 1998) |
| HIV envelope protein gp41 | Transmembrane envelope protein of the human immunodeficiency virus which is encoded by the HIV env gene. It has a molecular weight of 41,000 and is glycosylated. The n-terminal part of gp41 is thought to be involved in cell fusion with the CD4 antigens of t4 lymphocytes, leading to syncytial formation. Gp41 is one of the most common HIV antigens detected by immunoblotting. (12 Dec 1998) |
| PTC protein | Formed by the reaction of phenylisothiocyanate with a terminal alpha-amino group of a peptide or protein See: phenylisothiocyanate, phenylthiohydantoin. Synonym: PhNCS protein, PTC protein. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hn protein | Glycoprotein from sendai, para-influenza, newcastle disease, and other viruses that participates in binding the virus to cell-surface receptors. The hn protein possesses both haemagglutinin and neuraminidase activity. (12 Dec 1998) |
| secretory protein | <protein> In eukaryotes, proteins synthesised on rough endoplasmic reticulum and destined for export. Nearly all proteins secreted from cells are glycosylated (in the Golgi apparatus, although there are exceptions (albumin). In prokaryotes, secreted proteins may be synthesised on ribosomes associated with the plasma membrane or exported post translation. (18 Nov 1997) |
| purified placental protein | human placental lactogen |
| purified protein derivative of tuberculin | Purified tuberculin containing the active protein fraction; the tuberculin from which it is prepared differs from tuberculin chiefly in that the bacteria are grown in a synthetic rather than in a broth medium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| housekeeping protein | <molecular biology> Those sets of proteins involved in the basic functioning of a cell or the set of cells in an organism, for example enzymes involved in synthesis and processing of DNA, RNA, proteins or the major metabolic pathways. As opposed to luxury proteins. (18 Nov 1997) |
| H-protein lipoyltransferase | <enzyme> Requires lipoyl-AMP and apo-h-protein to generate the active h-protein of the glycine cleavage system Registry number: EC 2.3.1.- Synonym: lipoyl-AMP-n(epsilon)-lysine lipoyltransferase (26 Jun 1999) |
| pyp2 protein tyrosine phosphatase | <enzyme> Shares an essential overlapping role with pyp1 ptpase and is 42% identical in sequence in the c-terminal catalytic domain of pyp1; involved in negative regulation of mitosis in fission yeast Registry number: EC 3.1.3.- Synonym: pyp2 ptpase, pyp2 gene product (26 Jun 1999) |
| pyp3 protein tyrosine phosphatase | <enzyme> Acts as mitotic inducer in fission yeast Registry number: EC 3.1.3.- Synonym: pyp3 gene product, pyp3 ptpase (26 Jun 1999) |
| human plasma protein fraction | A sterile solution of selected proteins derived from the blood plasma of adult human donors, containing 4.5 to 5.5 g of protein per 100 ml, of which 83 to 90% is albumin and the remainder is alpha-and beta-globulins; used as a blood volume supporter. (05 Mar 2000) |
| serotonin-binding protein kinase | <enzyme> An aspect of protein kinases EC 2.7.1.37 Registry number: EC 2.7.1.- Synonym: sbp kinase (26 Jun 1999) |
| pyrophosphate-protein phosphotransferase | <enzyme> Not dependent on ATP; inhibited by fluoride Registry number: EC 2.7.1.- (26 Jun 1999) |
