Phytomastigophorea a class comprising all of the plantlike, as opposed to animal-like, protozoa (subphylum Mastigophora, phylum Sarcomastigophora), which are collectively known as the phytoflagellates. Phytomastigophoreans are characterized by the presence of chromatophores and usually one or two emergent flagella, with ameboid forms occurring in some groups. They are mostly free-living and are typically autotrophic. These organisms are sometimes classified with the algae. Called also Phytomastigophora. Cf. Zoomastigophorea.
