| glycogen |
The major complex carbohydrate in animal cells made of glucose. Glycogen is for animals what starch is for plants. | glycosaminoglycan |
Shortened to GAG. Linear long chains (polysaccharide - many sugar molecules) comprising sugar molecules arranged in repeating disaccharide (two sugar) units with up to 10-20,000 disaccharides per GAG chain. GAGs are highly charged and make up the bulk of the mass of proteoglycans. The role of a GAG depends on its nature. May or may not be sulphated, eg, hyaluronic acid (not sulphated), heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate. Major component of extracellular matrix.
