piezoelectric A piezoelectric material expands or contracts when a voltage is applied across it. Piezoelectric tubes are often used to move the tip in an AFM or STM. If a piezoelectric crystal is compressed, a voltage appears across it. This effect is sometimes used to measure displacements. A commonly used piezoelectric is PZT (Pb,Zr)TiO 3 .
