histamine a hormone/chemical transmitter involved in local immune responses. When released, histamine causes blood vessels to dilate and increase in permeability, allowing fluid and cells of the immune system to leak from the bloodstream. In normal cases, this allows cells to migrate to the site of injury or infection, but in an allergic reaction, too much histamine is released, and it has counter-productive effects.
